Barry Hopwood

Barry is currently Head of Music, PSHE and Charities lead at St. John’s School in Northwood. He is also Director of Music and Organist at St. Saviour’s Church in Walthamstow, and a freelance musician, in many genres.

Barry has over thirty years experience in the music industry, starting out as a freelance musician working in cabaret and professional theatre before moving into classroom teaching. He is a singer (first study) and as such has sung as a soloist and in choirs since he was age 6. In 2018, whilst singing as part of Lumen Chamber Choir, an Acapella group, Barry was asked to compose two short pieces for an Album they were recording for Convivium Records called Lumen de Lumine, and in 2019 the choir completed a tour of Rome which culminated in the ensemble singing Mass at St Peter’s Basilica. Shortly after the tour he went on to take over as Choral Director of the group, which he did until early 2024.

When not involved in music Barry is a keen swimmer, spends time in the gym as well as Kayaking and watching Rugby.
