Levelling Up Through Music: How The People’s Orchestra Is Helping Shape a More Inclusive Creative Future

At The People’s Orchestra, we believe music has the power to transform lives – not just on the concert stage, but in care homes, community centres, and towns where arts opportunities are few and far between. That’s why we’re proud to align with the ambitions set out in the UK Government’s new Creative Industries Sector Plan, which puts creative talent, innovation, and inclusion at the heart of national growth.

While the plan outlines support for high-growth creative sectors, it also recognises the importance of spreading opportunity across every part of the UK. It commits to investing in regional creative clusters, developing homegrown talent, and helping more people participate in cultural life. This is precisely where The People’s Orchestra makes its mark.

For over a decade, we’ve built community choirs and orchestras in areas of low arts engagement – offering accessible, affordable music-making that tackles social isolation and supports mental well-being. We work with people from all walks of life, including those facing poverty, unemployment, or loneliness. Through rehearsals, performances and creative projects, we give people a reason to connect, grow in confidence, and find their voice.

We’re already delivering the kind of impact the Sector Plan envisions – from local creative job creation to helping people upskill in music, performance, and digital storytelling. Our concerts bring vibrancy to high streets and public spaces, supporting the regeneration of communities that have long been overlooked. We’re proud to be part of the solution – levelling up through creativity.

As the government invests in new funding, infrastructure and skills pathways for the creative sector, we stand ready to play our part – ensuring that grassroots community music remains central to the UK’s creative future. We’ll continue working with local authorities, education providers and creative partners to unlock opportunities for the people and places who need it most.

Because everyone deserves a chance to be heard. And when we lift up every voice, we build a stronger, fairer, more creative nation.
