Historic venues in new ‘heartwarming’ concert season that doesn’t break the bank
Music lovers can enjoy concerts in some of the UK’s most stunning venues at budget prices in the lead up to Christmas. Many events are also free allowing families to get the most out of the joy that music brings.
Autumn to winter season gigs by The People’s Orchestra family provide the music and atmosphere but don’t break the bank as they are performed by their pro-amateur musician members.
Audiences will be treated to everything from iconic movie soundtracks and Christmas pop hits in famous venues including Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and Swansea Minster, where Bonnie Tyler’s final farewell recently took place.
Starting off the season, The People’s Big Band will entertain with its mix of jazz and blues at historic Botanical Gardens in Birmingham’s leafy suburb of Edgbaston.
Setting a buoyant mood of light and breezy tunes, the Big Band will play in the Band Stand for free in the afternoon to anyone who has bought an entry tickets into Botanical Gardens on Sunday September 27. They will be performing between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

The band have been invited back after their popular performance at the beautiful gardens as part of Swingamajig in April 2023.
In Wales, the Welsh branch of The People’s Orchestra called Cerddorfa’r Bobl (pronounced Cer-thor-vy-uh Bob-ul for English speakers) is putting on a free Come and Play Day to reach out to new members on Saturday September 19 from 11am to 3pm in St Mary’s Parish Centre Church, Union Street in Carmarthen. It’s a chance to experience Cerddorfa’r Bobl in a friendly, relaxed setting with spectacular and engaging film scores, right from its debut in the local community.
Cerddorfa’r Bobl will then perform seminal movie and TV soundtracks along with some festive favourites at the Something Magical concert inside famous Swansea Minster in the run up to Christmas.
The concert on Saturday November 28 takes place from 4pm to 6pm and costs £10 or £7.50 concessions, which is far less than a regular orchestral concert.
Over in Birmingham, The People’s Orchestra and The People’s Show Choir will come together for its annual large-scale Christmas concert that has brought tears of joy to audiences in previous years.
Talented members travel from across the country to perform. This year, the concert is at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Saturday December 12 at 4pm and called Something Magical – A Film Night In. The special gig will be performed by a 70-piece orchestra and 450-piece choir.
It’s billed as being a “cozy night of film music featuring fan favourites and forgotten treasures from stage and screen”. Expect to hear music from movies including Stardust and Oliver!
Tickets cost between £21 and £30 at the internationally-renowned venue where concerts can often demand prices into triple figures.
