The People’s Show Choir is about more than just music. We believe in choirs that are welcoming, life-enhancing, and rooted in community, and our leaders sit right at the heart of that. As a national charity, we’re committed to bringing singing to more people, especially in areas where community provision is limited or struggling to recover after the challenges of recent years.

The course is aimed particularly at community musicians, music graduates and music educators. As Ula explains, “you don’t need to be an expert conductor, but we are looking for charismatic people who read music and have some experience of leading a singing group.” People who are confident, ready to inspire and want to help build something.

The course will take place on 14–15 March 2026 at West Bromwich Town Hall, and will be led by Ula Weber, renowned conductor trainer and Choral Programme Manager for The People’s Orchestra alongside Chris Weber, The People’s Show Choir’s Community Engagement Manager and an expert community choir leader.

Choir Leader Ula Weber

“Our choir leaders are more than just conductors,” says Chris. “They’re community leaders. They are people who help others feel seen, welcome, and part of something. The more trained leaders we have, the more choirs we can launch in areas that need them most.”

This course is practical, hands-on, and unique. Ula said: “With this course, we aim to take a bespoke approach by focusing on the specific skills required to engage and inspire a community choir. We’ll take an in-depth look at the responsibilities of being a community choir leader and offer plenty of practical tips too, from developing song leading skills to exploring best practice rehearsal techniques. It’s going to be an exciting weekend!”

The training also opens the door to a genuine paid opportunity. Those who complete the course successfully and demonstrate the right approach will be invited to lead a The People’s Show Choir in their area.

The People’s Show Choir leaders currently run groups ranging from 20 to over 100 singers, rehearse weekly in term time, and perform both locally and at national massed choir events. As Chris puts it, “We’re building something powerful, and we’d love to welcome new leaders into the fold.”
