2019 – The People’s Show Choir launches!

Following the spirit of our orchestra name and providing access to the arts for all, The People’s Orchestra Charity launched ‘The People’s Show Choir‘ – a community network of singers who come together to share their joy in music-making and connect with others from their local communities. The idea came about after Sarah’s family watched ‘The Greatest Showman’ and being inspired by the uplifting and empowering songs from its musical soundtrack. Hearing a choir perform with a full orchestra seemed to Sarah an opportunity not to be missed! It’s fair to say a lot of the promotional artwork for our People’s (Greatest) Show Choir was inspired by the film.

Little did we know how popular increasing our network and end up becoming even bigger than our orchestra!

We were dipping our toes into new territory, having only experience with orchestral ensembles. However, our team would soon prove how capable we were of managing choirs too! When we launched in March 2019, it was a very small network with Birmingham and West Bromwich as the first two established Show Choirs. But soon, as they became popular, we started expanding into Nottingham, Oswestry, Northampton, Cheltenham and Stoke on Trent. Little did we know how popular increasing our network and end up becoming even bigger than our orchestra!

Keeping in spirit of the charity, all our choir members received TPSC-emblazoned T-shirts with different colours on their emblems to represent each choir i.e. blue for Birmingham etc. It was very exciting to give our singers the chance to sing live with an orchestra providing the music!

Our choirs performed their first major concerts later that year: ‘Film Greats: Fantastic Worlds’ in October 2019 and ‘Something Magical: Santa’s Playlist’ Christmas concert in December that year. Seeing orchestra and choirs all performing together was a sight – and sound – to behold!
