We Are One released ahead of the Commonwealth Games
Music recordings are saved after their van and recording equipment were stolen from local orchestra
After a recording weekend ended in disaster for an arts charity in January 2022, when their white Fiat van containing sound and video recording equipment worth thousands of pounds was stolen from Birmingham City Centre, precious music files have been saved for release ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer
The People’s Orchestra and singers from The People’s Show Choirs and National Teachers Choir had been recording a new work by award-winning film composer John Koutselinis celebrating the Commonwealth that will feature in this summer’s Commonwealth Games just minutes before their van was stolen
Since then, and despite none of the stolen equipment or van being seen again, instrumentalists and singers from Canada, Kenya, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand joined BBC presenter Katie Derham, to complete the new piece of music in time for the start of the Commonwealth Games.
INTERVIEW WITH JOHN KOUTSELINIS
Sarah Marshall, Founder and Chief Executive of The People’s Orchestra, said, “I’m so proud of all the musicians, singers and staff who have come together to create this epic piece of music to celebrate community music making and the Commonwealth Games. We hope this piece truly shows that no matter what We Are One!”
‘We Are One’ will be played live at the Commonwealth Curiosity Concert as part of the Commonwealth Games Festival. The Commonwealth Community Orchestra and Choir whose performers include instrumentalists and vocalists from Commonwealth and UK along with The People’s Orchestra and The People’s Show Choirs will be on stage at Secret Space in Birmingham on the 24th July to celebrate the power of movie music to unite us.
