The People’s Orchestra has always been dedicated to making a positive impact in our community, and our enhanced Benefits Advice Line is no exception. Over the past year, we’ve been able to support hundreds of people facing financial difficulties, disabilities, and caring responsibilities, helping them access the benefits they deserve and giving them the tools to navigate the system with confidence.
Reaching Those in Need:
Our Benefits Advice Line has successfully reached 262 people, of which 21% were male, 40% have disabilities, and 23% are carers. Through our efforts, we have been able to claim back approximately £27,000 in arrears payments for beneficiaries and secure ongoing monthly payments of around £9,000 (£108,000 a year) in benefits for users. Most of these payments have been for people with disabilities or caring responsibilities.
Boosting Confidence and Skills:
Our support goes beyond financial assistance. We’ve found that 60% of our users reported increased confidence and gained skills in navigating the benefits system. Furthermore, 95% gained access to digital systems and support, enabling them to apply for the benefits and support they need.
Reaching More People:
Through our Benefits Advice Officer, we aim to support 780 people, with 60% expected to report increased confidence and skills in navigating systems and 65% gaining access to digital systems and support. We have successfully engaged young people through partnerships with universities, colleges, and Job Centres.
Addressing Complex Needs:
While we’ve had great success, we’ve also encountered challenges. Many of our participants have been unemployed for longer than anticipated, requiring more support for longer periods. We are working with individuals who have complex, intersecting needs, including 78% with disabilities and 40% with multiple disabilities. Furthermore, a high proportion of people we support have caring responsibilities, which requires flexibility to ensure meaningful engagement.
