The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on employment and wellbeing, particularly among certain vulnerable groups. The People’s Orchestra has risen to the challenge by launching a new iteration of our long-term employability project, Bridge, designed to support these individuals in regaining their footing in the job market and rebuilding their lives.
A Strong Start:
Our Employment Liaison Officer has supported 28 additional people since the project’s inception. The majority of these participants (82%) have been out of work for over 12 months, with 3 individuals experiencing unemployment for over a decade. Among our participants, 57% have caring responsibilities, and 78% have disabilities, with 40% reporting multiple disability needs. Despite these challenges, the program has achieved remarkable outcomes: 93% of participants reported increased confidence and wellbeing, and 28% have gained paid employment or entered further education/training.
Adapting to Greater Needs:
We have encountered challenges in engaging individuals requiring longer-term support, as many have been unemployed for longer than anticipated. Some have complex and intersecting needs, including disabilities and caring responsibilities, which can make regular appointments challenging. To address this, we have adapted our approach, increasing flexibility to meet the unique needs of each participant and maintain engagement.
A Trusted Partner for Complex Cases:
Our close collaboration with local Job Centres has led to referrals for individuals with particularly complex needs, as these centers recognise our ability to provide bespoke, long-term support that they cannot. The People’s Orchestra’s support is not time-limited, allowing us to build trust, create personalized plans, and deliver outcomes that address each individual’s specific circumstances.
Empowering Participants:
The Bridge program was designed to support the long-term unemployed and those with complex needs, but the extent and complexity of these needs exceeded our expectations. Our approach empowers participants by providing support, resources, tools, and skills for them to address their own challenges, ultimately restoring the confidence that has often been eroded by navigating systems ill-equipped to handle their unique needs.
The People’s Orchestra’s Bridge project demonstrates our unwavering commitment to supporting the long-term unemployed and those facing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. By adapting our approach, we provide personalised support that empowers participants to overcome obstacles and build a brighter future. As we continue this important work, we remain dedicated to transforming lives through our community-focused initiatives.
